AT&T philanthropy in N.C. tops $2.5M

Building a bright future for city • To increase the economic activity of Newport and the surrounding area by helping companies to employ and train local people • To boost the local economy by encouraging as much use of sub-contractors and suppliers as possible • To maximise the involvement of communities where there are large area based projects. The initiative encourages companies of all sizes to sign up to the Newport Construction Employment Charter – a code of practice where employers show their commitment to best practice and invest in the future of the industry. The latest companies to sign the charter are Wates Living Space who are one of the UKs largest affordable housing contractors and Newport based Entrance and Control Systems. Phil Larcombe, of Entrance Control Systems, said: ” As a local company we share the belief that a highly skilled and motivated workforce in the Newport area is vital to the long term regeneration of the city. ” Local people and businesses are continuing to benefit from a council-led project with two more companies signing up to a charter which aims to maximise the benefits from the city’s construction industry. Newport Construction Initiative works with developers, businesses, skilled trades people and a new generation of trainees to ensure that local people and firms benefit from the increase in construction projects within the city. The initiative has four main aims: • To improve the employment prospects of local people by linking them to jobs and training opportunities which arise through new development and refurbishment works

 

King’s breakthrough in fight against Cancer

     A team at King’s have identified a switch that could boost the body’s own anti-cancer mechanisms and fight tumours. Scientists believe that the body's immune system recognizes abnormal cells and attacks them before they evolve to be cancerous, implying that cancer would be even a more common disease without this mechanism.

DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) Compliance by 2004

     All service providers will have to satisfy the door entry/access control requirements of Part III of the Disability Discrimination Act.
     In many cases, to provide level access requirements for wheelchairs, the simple combination of a portable ramp, entrance control intercom, or digital keypad system, a perfectly adequate solution.

 

Registration for Domiciliary Care Workers


     Care Services Minister, Ivan Lewis, has announced the extension of registration by the General Social Care Council to those working in domiciliary care.
     This will come into effect later in 2007 and will cover England. The GSCC have recommended that social care workers on the register should complete training at NVQ level 2 during their first period of training.
     The Minister also announced a one-off £1 million fund for Universities offering a Post Qualifying social work programme.

 

Assisted Dying Debate


     The Voluntary Euthanasia Society has announced that it will now be known as ‘Dignity in Dying: Your Life, Your Choice'. The name change is an attempt to move away from negative connotations of the word ‘euthanasia' in the lead up to the Lords debate on Lord Joffe's Bill on Assisted Dying.
     Kate Nash, said, "Legislation of this sort runs the risk of reinforcing public opinion that disabled people are somehow tragic figures to be pitied. It serves to diminish the value that society places on the lives of the disabled.
